Jap pumpkins, are known by several names, including Kent Pumpkin, Japanese Pumpkin or Kabocha. The appearance of the Kent Pumpkins is that of the green/grey skin is mottled yellow and brown and is easily cut. A nutty flavoured pumpkin, it has yellow and orange flesh that is soft and drier than most. The Jap Pumpkin is available all year round.
To Choose a good Jap Pumpkin. Look for the pumpkin that is firm and brightly coloured. Good quality pumpkins should be free from cracks, soft spots or excessive scarring. When the Pumpkin is uncut it can be stored for several months in a cool, dry, dark place. Optimal storage conditions are between 10°C-15°C
Jap Pumpkins are an abundant source of vitamin A and C, potassium, and dietary fibre. Jap Pumpkins have been linked with the prevention of cancer, the promotion of lung health . The seed of the pumpkin is also nutritious; it is a great source of omega oils.
